Upgrade VMware Tools on MacOS: A Frustrating Experience

I'm writing this article as a frustrated user who has encountered an issue with upgrading VMware Tools on my Mac. I've tried to follow the instructions provided by VMware, but unfortunately, it's not working as expected.

When I click on the 'Upgrade VMware Tools' menu item in the VMware version 4 UI, I get a screen shot that shows the upgrade process is not working properly (see attached image). This is exactly what VMware's own KB article confirms: instead of downloading and installing the tools on-demand, users are forced to download the full installer package.
